Lyon winger Malo Gust has undergone a medical in London before joining Chelsea.

The Blues have reached a £26.3m deal with the French side to sign the highly-rated defender, who will remain on loan at Lyon for the remainder of the season.

Chelsea were keen to bring in a right-back alternative to Reece James and identified 19-year-old France Under-21 international defender Gusto.

Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly has made a series of lucrative signings since taking office.

The Blues met with initial resistance to his interest from Lyon and chairman Jean-Michel Aulas publicly stated that Gusto “will continue to play” for Lyon until the end of the season.

He will join Christopher Nkunku as a previously agreed summer arrival after Chelsea also finalized a £53m deal to sign the French striker from RB Leipzig.

Gusto, 19, has made 54 appearances for Lyon’s first team in three years and has become a fixture in their starting eleven, despite his age.

Meanwhile, Chelsea midfielder Cesare Casadei, his £12m summer signing from Inter Milan, will join Reading on loan after this weekend.

Gusto will remain in France for the remainder of the season as part of his deal with Chelsea.

Gusto will be Chelsea’s seventh signing in this window, including the loan of Joao Félix.

There remains the possibility of an eighth with a central midfield, another department that Chelsea wants to strengthen.

So far, they have been frustrated in their attempts this month to land the likes of Enzo Fernández from Benfica, Moisés Caicedo from Brighton and Amadou Onana from Everton.
