New footage from a 2016 interview with police Sherri Papini, who mimicked the plot of ‘Gone Girl’ by attempting to carry out her own kidnapping, shows the mother of two speaking to police with a swollen and bandaged nose in the immediate aftermath of the ordeal.
In a clip that aired Friday morning on Good Morning America, Papini, 39, is seen with a bandage over the bridge of her nose as she told law enforcement officers she was hesitant to discuss the kidnapping with them because she doesn’t know if they’re “in”. my corner.’
“I don’t know you guys. I don’t know if you’re in my corner,’ she said.
‘I know my husband. I know my husband is near me, but you know there was a lot of other stuff and I know you guys know all about everything. It’s embarrassing and dirty and that’s weird to me.’
Papini, a mother of two, faked her kidnapping in 2016, including a number of self-inflicted injuries she presented to police and medicals
Her plot was eventually thwarted when police discovered she had found shelter with her ex-boyfriend, who helped her inflict some of the wounds that left her resurfacing.
Papini (pictured here with husband Keith) told investigators she trusted her husband but was reluctant to trust the police because she wasn’t sure they were in her corner
Papini’s story eventually fell apart and she was confronted by police with the holes in her story after ex-boyfriend James Reyes revealed where she had been for 22 days in November
James Reyes told police Papini inflicted injuries on herself while she was staying with him, including beating herself to bruise and burning herself on her arms
ABC will air a new episode of 20/20 on Friday night entitled The Vanishing Act that focuses on Papini’s hoax that has fooled the country for years.
The special features newly released evidence from the investigation and interviews with former Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko, former California Redding Mayor Missy McArthur and Northern Hispanic Latino Coalition co-founder Alan Ernesto Phillips.
In November 2016, Papini disappeared from her Redding neighborhood while jogging. The married mother of two returned two weeks later, nearly hundreds of miles away, “daunted, battered and bruised,” insisting she be held by two Latina women for 22 days.
When Papini was found she had ligaments to her body and self-inflicted injuries, including a swollen nose and a blurry ‘mark’ on her right shoulder. She had other bruises and rashes on many parts of her body, ligature marks on her wrists and ankles, and burns on her left forearm.
Nearly six years later, Papini’s kidnapping plan was unraveled and she was charged with committing the hoax in March.
She eventually pleaded guilty to one count of fraud and one of lying to a federal office.
“I am deeply ashamed of my behavior and deeply sorry for the pain I have caused my family, my friends, all the good people who have needlessly suffered through my story, and those who have worked so hard to help me. ‘ she said in the courtroom.
“I’ll work for the rest of my life to make amends for what I’ve done,” Papini said.
She was sentenced earlier this month to 18 months in prison, more than double the time demanded by prosecutors, and will be forced to pay back more than $300,000 in money spent by the state on her investigation.
The mother of two must turn herself in before November 8. In addition to her prison sentence, Papini will be given a 36-month probation period.
Papini’s husband, Keith Papini, filed for divorce from his wife for more than a decade in April, having stayed with her for the past six years since the alleged kidnapping.
He has filed for custody of their two children, Tyler (9) and Violet (7).
He also filed to get exclusive use of the couple’s rented home in Redding, California, their three cars, a Ford Majestic motorhome, and a Correct Craft Wakeboard boat.
The divorce papers reveal that she and Keith split on the same day she was arrested this year, describing Papini’s “literally being dealt with” by law enforcement officers during her children’s arrest outside of school.
