Luton’s Premier League game at home against Burnley, scheduled for August 19, has been postponed.

The game was scheduled to be Luton’s first home game following their promotion to the top flight, but they could not guarantee that ongoing works at their Kenilworth Road ground will not affect the schedule of the game.

Luton will start the Premier League season at Brighton on August 12 and then face Chelsea on August 25. Their first home game is currently scheduled against West Ham on September 12.

The Hatters’ Kenilworth Road ground has a capacity of 10,356, meeting the Premier League’s minimum requirement of 5,000. However, it does not currently meet media facility standards.

Work began on improving the Bobbers grandstand to meet broadcasting requirements earlier this summer.

Luton have had planning permission for a new stadium at Power Court since 2019 and plan to move into the ground in 2026, regardless of which division they are in.

Luton CEO Gary Sweet told the the club’s official website: ‘The collective decision to postpone this competition is regrettable, especially given the tremendous progress that continues to be made with our construction work; our current schedule is indeed on time but there is no additional contingency and therefore we cannot at this stage give an ironclad guarantee that an issue beyond our control, however minor, would not later force a delay and inconvenience supporters of both clubs.

While this news will be a disappointment, it will make the match experience even greater for fans when they return.

“We would like to thank the Premier League and Burnley for helping us make this practical decision.”

Meanwhile, Manchester City’s match against Brentford, which was scheduled for December 23, has been postponed due to Pep Guardiola’s team involvement in the Club World Cup.

City takes part in the tournament in Saudi Arabia after winning the Champions League last season.
