Lulu Sun is on the ride of her life and shines in her main draw debut at Wimbledon.
The 23-year-old, who remains unnoticed with fewer than 5,000 followers on Instagram, is through to the fourth round after wins over Miriam Bulgaru, Gabriela Knutson, Alexandra Eala, Qinwen Zheng, Yuliia Starodubtseva and Lin Zhu.
Sun was born in Te Anau, an incredibly small town on New Zealand’s South Island, with dreams of becoming a tennis star.
“It’s a very small town with practically more sheep and deer than people!” Sun explained this week.
The trilingual number 123, who has guaranteed herself £226,000 in prize money whatever happens (her prize money to date was £245,000), will be hoping to beat favourite Raducanu.
Emma Raducanu knows all too well how likely it is that qualifiers will experience the tournament of their lives.
Raducanu was the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam title in New York in 2021. She is therefore very wary of the possibility that Sun will cause another surprise.
