Luke Brattan isn’t playing in the A-League grand final – but he’s still getting an experience every Aussie soccer star dreams of

  • Will face Premier League team Newcastle United
  • Part of Global Football Week in Melbourne

Luke Brattan has enjoyed many highs in his A-League career, but it is incredibly difficult to outscore Premier League opposition.

Brattan, 34, will be a key figure for the A-League All Stars when they take on Newcastle United on Friday. And remarkably, the Sydney FC captain will have to play through the pain of a broken foot.

β€œI hurt him in the elimination finals [against Macarthur FC on May 4]so I had a few shots [needles] to keep going,” the defensive midfielder told Ny Breaking Australia.

‘I’ve been lucky in my career to have played against Everton and Liverpool before, so I wouldn’t miss this match.

β€œIt’s a special opportunity that I’m sure all the boys will enjoy.

‘It also applies to the younger boys: you never know who is watching in the world.’

Brattan will also attend the A-League Grand Final on Saturday evening when the Central Coast Mariners host Melbourne Victory in Gosford.

His Sky Blues are extremely unlucky not to play in the decider after encountering a number of controversial decisions in the second qualifier on May 18.

β€œIt was a tough task, we played really well, I was proud of the boys, we had a great season,” he said.

“I guess it just wasn’t that way.”

Outside of his contract, Brattan would like to stay at Sydney FC, but he knows the decision is out of his hands.

‘I’m going to sit down with my partner after this [All Stars] play and figure out what we want to do next,” he said.

‘I’ve been at the club since 2019, hopefully we can get something out of it.’

The A-League All Stars will take on Newcastle at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium on Friday from 5:05pm AEST, while the A-League Women’s All Stars will line up against Arsenal at the same venue from 8:05pm AEST as part of a double header.

Matildas trio Steph Catley, Caitlin Foord and Kyra Cooney-Cross will feature on the Gunners team sheet as part of Global Football Week.
