Luis Suarez signs new contract with Inter Miami just a day after the club hired Javier Mascherano

Luis Suarez is keeping his talents in South Beach as he signed a one-year extension with Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami on Wednesday.

Suarez’s stay with the Herons boosts Barcelona’s reunion tour, with former teammate Javier Mascherano officially hired as the team’s head coach on Tuesday.

The Camp Nou expansion also includes Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, all of whom plied their trade together in Spain for years.

Suarez joined Inter Miami after playing for clubs in South America for two seasons.

This was followed by a long stay at clubs in the European top division from 2006 to 2022.

Besides Barcelona, Suarez was a star for Liverpool, Ajax and Atletico Madrid.

Suarez will remain at Inter Miami until at least 2025 after signing an extension with the team

Suarez keeps the core of former Barcelona players together, including Messi

Suarez retired from the Uruguayan national team earlier this year as the country’s all-time top scorer.

For longtime football fans, Suarez is a controversial figure, who became known for biting opponents.

Suarez was also infamous for his deliberate handball during the 2010 World Cup quarter-final against Ghana, in which he picked up a red card by denying the winning goal.

Uruguay would eventually win that match and advance to the semi-finals, for which Suarez was suspended due to the red card.

In 2024, Inter Miami won the MLS’ Supporters’ Shield, which was awarded to the best team of the regular season.

However, the Herons were eliminated in the first round of the play-offs by Atlanta United.
