Luis Rubiales: Former Spanish Football Association president banned from all football-related activities for three years

Former Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales has been banned from all football-related activities for three years.

The former president of the Spanish federation was suspended for 90 days by FIFA on August 26 to shield an investigation into his conduct during the Women’s World Cup final.

Rubiales kissed Spanish player Jenni Hermoso on the lips during the awards ceremony in Sydney on August 20. He also picked up his cross to celebrate Spain’s 1–0 win over England and carried Spanish player Athenea del Castillo over his shoulder during the post-match celebrations.

While Rubiales initially tried to continue in his role, he resigned last month as president of the Spanish federation and vice-president of UEFA, and has now been punished for breaching Article 13 of FIFA’s disciplinary code.

Rubiales is under criminal investigation in Spain. He denies any wrongdoing.

A FIFA statement added: “Mr Rubiales has been informed of the terms of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee’s decision today. In accordance with the relevant provisions of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.

“He has ten days to request a reasoned decision, which will then be published on legal.fifa.com if requested. The decision remains subject to possible appeal to the FIFA Appeals Committee.

“FIFA reiterates its absolute commitment to respect and protect the integrity of all people and to ensure that the basic rules of decent behavior are respected.”
