Love Island’s Amber Gill admits she felt like ‘the most hated woman in Britain’ after ‘savage’ comments towards Callum Macleod on show

Amber Gill has revealed she felt like ‘the most hated woman in Britain’ after her first week on Love Island.

The TV personality, 26, who won the 2019 series with Greg O’Shea, told how she was branded a ‘b***h’ for telling fellow islander Callum Macleod, then 28, that he was too old for her .

Viewers at the time called Amber, who was 21 at the time, “savage” for her comments about their seven-year age difference.

When they met on their first day, Callum told Amber he was 28, to which she replied: ‘Ah, so you’re old then.’

Speaking about the Glad we had this conversation with Caroline Hirons podcast, she said, β€œI was really lucky because I got to stay in for so long that I went through it as a process of people not liking us and then liking us.

β€œI think they started to understand my personality, and it was so funny because people were like, she’s grown so much. And I think: I haven’t grown. You just saw different parts of my face.

‘I haven’t sat on a beanbag and suddenly I’ve turned into a different personality. You just saw more of my personality.

‘So I think in the first week I was the most hated person in Britain at the time. I was hated the most because I told a guy that the sunglasses he was wearing didn’t match and everyone said, she’s so amazing. And I thought, well, he didn’t.

‘What do you want us to say? He did. He looked terrible. Oh, and then I was 21 and he was 28. And I said, God, that’s a little old for me – it was a little old for me at the time. And apparently I was thrilled with that.’

Callum and Amber were linked in the first week of the show, but he was then dumped on day five as she teamed up with Anton Danyluk.

Although Amber has since appeared on shows like Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, she feels like she’s done with TV now.

‘I don’t really have my heart set on TV. I find it suffocating. It’s just repetitive. It’s a bit boring,” she said.

Amber has found it difficult to adjust to fame and admitted that she doesn’t think it’s ‘possible’ that the producers can help the islanders so much, even though they all receive therapy and aftercare after the show.

‘That’s what they’re trying to do [help], but I don’t think it’s possible,” she said. ‘That’s not possible, because they don’t know what it’s like. I thought, I want to go in and tell people, and help people, because I would just say, it sucks.

β€œEven though I won, and it was great and everyone loved it – it sucks – and in ways because you just don’t know how to deal with it.

“And we’ve had training, and we’ve had therapy, but there’s no training that can prepare you for that, because you’re living the experience.”

Offering advice to future Islanders, she added: β€œI would say don’t sign up for Love Island without knowing what you’re getting into first. But I didn’t and it worked perfectly for me. But I wouldn’t recommend it as it was like a train pulling in blind.

‘I knew nothing about the influencer world. I knew nothing about the PR world, the press, the TV world. I didn’t know anything about anything.’

Amber also shared that she was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 24, saying that she previously considered herself “lazy” before her diagnosis.

She said: ‘I was ridiculously difficult [on myself]. And then, you know, it really got worse, I think, when I got to the point where I was diagnosed, because I think before in school and everything, I didn’t really notice what was going on.

‘But after Love Island it stood out because there were people who had collections and posted so much on social media.

β€œAnd by doing this, I couldn’t do anything and everyone was like, she won the show and she’s not doing anything. And I’m like, I’m going at the pace I can.”
