‘Harry always fit the mould’: Louis Tomlinson confesses he was ‘envious’ of Styles’ solo success and refuses to defend the star’s controversial Grammy speech as he admits it’s ‘hard to imagine’ a reunion of one direction
Louis Tomlinson admitted he was envious of Harry Styles’ solo success after One Direction broke up.
The couple were bandmates. who first found fame in The X Factor in 2010 and became one of the most successful boy bands in history.
After breaking up in 2016, they all left to pursue solo careers, but Harry has seen a meteoric rise in fame, having released three number-one albums and garnered three Grammy Awards.
Louis, whose debut album Walls peaked at number four in the UK charts, confessed he battled jealousy at first, admitting the band always suspected Harry would be the more successful solo artist.
He said The times: ‘Well, it’s not a surprise, is it? We always knew Harry fit that mold, and it’s been an incredible thing to watch.”

He continued: ‘Envy? Maybe in the beginning, when I was trying to find my way, but it’s never healthy to compare your own success to that of others, right? These days I am learning to rise up in those moments when I have to. I didn’t know how to do that before, but now? Now I know I fucking can’.
Harry recently came under fire for his “deaf” acceptance speech when he won Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards.
The singer sparked controversy with his speech after claiming that “people like me” don’t win the Grammys, with fans pointing out that as a white, cisgender male, he’s actually the complete opposite.
Louis refused to defend his bandmate, saying carefully, “Only Harry knows what he means there, it’s hard to speculate.” But we all come from relatively humble beginnings, and now we are where we are.’
Louis, Harry, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Liam Payne all rose to the global spotlight during their time in One Direction.
Zayn left the group in early 2015 and the remaining four released another album, Made In The AM, before they broke up, with Louis admitting he was “gutted” and “bitter” by the split.
Fans have been calling for a reunion for years, but Louis confessed: “Getting back together at some point is hard to imagine right now.”
However, he didn’t rule it out entirely, reflecting, “I’d be surprised if we lived our lives and didn’t have a time where we had a reunion, or whatever you want to call it.” He would be up for it.

Last year, Louis said that “it would be a shame” if he and his bandmates never got together.
Speaking on ITV’s Lorraine, Louis discussed the prospect of the reunion and also recalled the group’s rise to fame.
When asked about getting back together, he said, “One day, there are a lot of moving parts, but it would be a shame if we didn’t.” I hope so.’
It comes after a new documentary about Louis’ solo career was released in Australia.
