I lost my penis in a motorcycle accident – here’s the effect it had on my sex life and how my wife reacted

A man who lost his penis in a horrific motorcycle accident tells how the accident affected his sex life.

The 33-year-old man was riding his motorcycle in 2020 when he was hit by a drunk driver and felt “something sharp” as his genitals were torn in two.

Although doctors were able to reconstruct the penis, the new penis became infected a week later, requiring complete amputation.

Despite being left with a small ‘stump’, he said he has learned not to take himself so seriously and that he and his wife’s sex life has ‘improved significantly’ since the accident.

“It’s incredibly important to surround yourself with people who are genuinely interested in your happiness,” said the man, who wished to remain anonymous.

“It was amazing to have a woman who accepted me completely and never made me feel inferior.”

The man is one of about 600 Americans who suffer a penile fracture each year, most often during sex or from physical trauma, such as a motorcycle accident.

In an Ask Me Anything (AMA) thread on Reddit, the motorcycle accident victim explained that the first year after losing his penis took the biggest toll.

“The first year was mentally horrible and I spent a lot of time with my psychiatrist,” he said.

“I felt like I wasn’t a man anymore and I didn’t want to stay married. I felt like I could never look at my wife again.”

He noted that he felt especially insecure because the small amount that was left was not enough for penetrative sex, so he suppressed any sexual desire.

However, after about two years the user reported that he had ‘stopped taking [himself] ‘so serious’ and used humor to deal with the situation.

This newfound sense of confidence also allowed him and his wife to experiment more in the bedroom.

Instead of penetrative sex, they opt for sex toys like strap-ons and focus on prostate stimulation.

‘[Our sex life] “It’s improved a lot. We’re bonding and learning to stimulate in different ways,” he said. “We’re both very happy sexually now.”

He also noted that he can still ejaculate from the remaining portion of his penis.

The man also said that after “doctors did some work there,” he can urinate normally, though he can no longer stand. “I sit like a woman,” he said.

The accident also caused several infections in his urethra, requiring a temporary catheter. “I can’t hold my pee as well as I used to. But it’s not a big problem if I take care of my business regularly,” the man said.

One of the man’s testicles was also removed after the accident.

The man noted that his wife has been “extremely supportive” during the ordeal, and that “a supportive partner is everything” during recovery. For now, the couple is considering adopting children.

“I would do anything to get my share back. But what happened happened, and I’ve learned to enjoy the little positives that come with it,” he said.

The injury required extensive surgery and months of recovery before he could learn to urinate and have sex again.

Although the penis does not contain any bones, a penile fracture involves the breaking of a piece of connective tissue, the tunica albuginea.

This structure is made up mainly of collagen, which surrounds and supports the parts of the penis that fill with blood during an erection.

The injury is usually accompanied by a distinct cracking, popping or snapping sound.
