Los Angeles Angels owner Arturo Moreno has announced his intention to sell the ball club after two decades of high expectations and declining results.

The Angels have struggled to meet expectations under Moreno in recent seasons despite the presence of two former MVPs: Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani, the slugging-pitching sensation who is in line for a massive contract extension.

‘It has been a great honor and privilege to own the Angels for 20 seasons,’ Moreno said in a statement. ‘As an Organization, we have worked to provide our fans an affordable and family-friendly ballpark experience while fielding competitive lineups, which included some of the game’s all-time greatest players.

‘Although this difficult decision was entirely our choice and deserved a great deal of thoughtful consideration, my family and I have ultimately come to the conclusion that now is the time. Throughout this process, we will continue to run the franchise in the best interest of our fans, employees, players, and business partners.’

Moreno, whose background is in advertising, became the first Mexican-American team owner in major US sports in 2003 when he bought the Angeles for a reported $180 million from Disney.

The team, which had won its first World Series in 2002, promptly signed former Montreal Expos slugger Vladimir Guerrero, signaling to fans that Moreno was apparently willing to spend to win.
