Lori Loughlin to play cop on Dick Wolf series in first recurring role since college admissions scandal

Lori Loughlin will star as a police lieutenant in On Call, marking her first recurring role since serving time in prison following a 2019 college admissions scandal.

The 60-year-old Loughlin, who served nearly two months in prison for her involvement in the scandal in late 2020, will play the role of a lieutenant bishop in the Dick Wolf series, which airs on Prime Video in January.

The Full House actress, who played Rebecca “Aunt Becky” Katsopolis in the ABC comedy and Netflix reboot, will be joined by Eriq La Salle, Troian Bellisario and Brandon Larracuente in the upcoming show.

The series marks the first scripted streaming project from Wolf Entertainment, the powerhouse behind the Law & Order, Chicago and FBI franchises.

This was said by series co-creator Elliot Wolf Entertainment weekly Wednesday that Loughlin was “a real pleasure to work with” on the series.

“As soon as she signed on for the role, she was all set,” Wolf said. “She wanted to do the research, she wanted to embody the character.”

Loughlin and her husband, fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, 61, are five years removed from their April 2019 indictment.

The couple was indicted in connection with allegations that they paid Rick Singer $500,000 to ensure that USC would recruit their daughters Isabella Rose, 26, and Olivia Jade, 25, to the school’s rowing team, despite having no background in had the sport.

In May 2020, the couple pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges in the case.

Loughlin received a two-month prison sentence, a $150,000 fine and 150 hours of community service following the guilty plea. She began her sentence in October 2020 in a federal prison in Dublin, California and was released in December.

Giannulli received a five-month prison sentence with a $250,000 fine and 250 hours of community service. He began his prison sentence in November 2020 and was transferred to home confinement in April 2021, about a month before his sentence ended.

Professionally, Loughlin’s legal troubles sidelined her during the fifth season of Fuller House and her return to the small screen came in 2021 in a two-part Christmas special for the GAC network’s When Hope Calls.

The actress was the center of a storyline in the sixth episode of the twelfth season of Curb Your Enthusiasm, which aired last March 10, in which she made fun of her legal misfortune to Larry David.

Playing a fictionalized version of herself, she sought David’s help to help her rejoin an exclusive golf club after being kicked out following the scandal.

Curb executive producer Jeff Schaffer told it THR When the show aired, he hoped the cameo would be a springboard to a comeback for Loughlin.

“It’s a great way to put the past behind you,” Schaffer said. ‘I hope it helps her career. She was great, and she should be working. She was really funny and great to work with. People should see, “Oh, she’s really funny. She’s great at this stuff.” So yeah, I hope she goes to work because she deserves it.”

In April, Loughlin told First for Women magazine that the 1997 Chumbawamba song Tubthumping was an inspiration to her in dealing with adversity.

“Every day we face different obstacles,” Loughlin said. “But to me, it’s like that song says, ‘I get knocked down, but I get back up.’ No one said life would be a piece of cake; We all make mistakes, but the most important thing is to persevere.’

Loughlin told the publication that she “tries to be a forgiving person” and is “not one to hold on to things.”

“Things happen to everyone,” Loughlin said. “We have all been in a position to ask for forgiveness, but to ask for it you also need to learn and know how to forgive.”

Loughlin said that “life is too short” to “hang on to negativity” and that “for your own health, you have to let things go.”
