Lord Rothermere becomes the chief executive of the Daily Mail group after taking the publisher private in December.

Paul Zwillenberg will step down as chief executive of the Daily Mail and General Trust (DMGT) after a six-year term in which the group took over the i-newspaper and New Scientist magazine.

Lord Rothermere, who is already chairman of the Daily Mail, will take on the additional role from 30 September.

DMGT was delisted from the London Stock Exchange after its largest shareholder, the Rotherere family, took it private.

Lord Rothermere said yesterday that the publisher was now ‘masters of our own destiny’.

He thanked Zwillenberg and said to the employees: ‘I am extremely grateful to Paul for everything he has done over the past 6.5 years.’

Zwillenberg, who will become a senior advisor, said it was the greatest privilege of his career to work with Lord Rothermere as he led DMGT at a key moment.
