Good Morning Britain has paid a sweet tribute to the friendship between Barry Humphries and King Charles following the comedian’s death.
Lord Archer, an old friend of Barry’s, who died on Saturday at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney aged 89, reflected on the career of Dame Edna Everage creator and his friendship with the royal family.
It was revealed that King Charles, who was a close friend of Humphries, called the Australian comedian shortly before his death.
Presenters Susanna Reid and Ed Balls played a clip from a 2013 Royal Variety performance where Humphries reduced the King and Queen Consort to stitches when he crashed their royal box.
Looking back at the moment, Lord Archer revealed that he would see Prince William and Prince Harry backstage at Barry’s shows when they were teenagers.

The archive footage showed Humphries, dressed in his Dame Edna costume, sneaking into the royal box of the Royal Albert Hall, where the King’s and Queen’s consort were seated.
The royal couple, who Lord Archer said they hadn’t heard what the comedian was up to, burst into laughter as the comedian waved awkwardly at them and took their seats in a box.
When a guard tapped Dame Edna on the shoulder and showed her a message written on a Royal Variety card, the comedian exclaimed, “I’m sorry, I have better seats.” before running out of the royal box, Charles and Camilla wiping away tears of laughter.
“He didn’t tell Camilla and Charles what he was about to do, or they wouldn’t have burst out laughing,” Lord Archer said.
The former MP said he was ‘not surprised’ that the King called Humphries before his death, citing their long-standing friendship.
He also recalled how the King took his sons to see Barry’s shows, saying “Once Mary and I went to see him at the Royal Theater Haymarket many, many years ago, he said, ‘Come and have a drink backstage'”.
“Prince William and Prince Harry were there, 14 and 12 years old, so I think the friendship lasted for many years,” he added.
