Longtime Biden supporter David Letterman vows to appear at Martha’s Vineyard fundraiser amid campaign crisis

Legendary late-night comedy host David Letterman will headline a fundraiser for the embattled Joe Biden.

The former CBS’s ‘Late Show’ host will headline the fundraiser on Martha Vineyard, along with Hawaii Gov. Josh Green at a home of the governor’s friends.

Letterman, 77, was billed as the evening’s “special guest” in an invitation seen by Deadline.com.

He has been seen as a loyal supporter and friend of Biden since his time as vice president, and his presence on the list is a sign that the president’s campaign is moving forward despite persistent calls for him to withdraw, even from former supporters.

The fundraiser will take place on July 29 and is one of ten actions planned for the last ten days of July.

“We stand with the President, the First Lady, the Vice President and the Democratic Party, through good times and hard times, because he has been there for us as a family and as a state,” Green wrote in a text message to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser on Friday confirming the fundraiser.

He declined to respond to a request for more details after The Associated Press first reported the upcoming event.

That same day, Biden, who is recovering from COVID-19 at his home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, called for a united front within his party while attempting to shift the focus back to Donald Trump and his plans for the White House.

He said he looks forward to campaigning again next week and challenging his rival and his claims, “while defending my own record and the vision I have for America:

“A world where we save our democracy, protect our rights and freedoms, and create opportunities for all,” he said.

“The stakes are high and the choice is clear,” he continued in a written statement. “Together, we will win.”

Despite a disastrous debate and a sharp exodus of Democratic donors, he continues to insist he is the best Democrat to beat the GOP frontrunner. Green told The AP he largely agrees.

“I think the president is going to stay in this race unless he feels like the race is unwinnable or he feels like he has to listen to other voices close to him saying he shouldn’t run,” Green said, without highlighting possible last-minute replacements such as Kamala Harris.

The fundraiser is one of 10 the president will host in the final days of July and will be held at a home in affluent Martha's Vineyard.

Hawaii Gov. Josh Green will also emcee the event. He is a longtime friend of the Bidens and said the party will be held at one of his friends’ homes. Green’s wife’s uncle was the commander in chief’s college roommate and was elected to his post in 2022.

“If the president felt like he couldn’t handle it and he really couldn’t handle it, he would resign.”

Despite backing his friend, he still said the decision on whether or not to withdraw from the race would ultimately come down to Biden himself, as his opinion is still in a downward spiral after last month’s disastrous debate.

In the weeks that followed, other key Biden supporters in Hollywood quickly changed their minds about the prospect of Biden running for a second term, with “Ocean’s Eleven” star George Clooney emerging as the frontrunner.

“It’s heartbreaking to say, but the Joe Biden I was at the fundraiser with three weeks ago was not the Joe ‘big F-ing deal’ Biden of 2010,” Clooney, a longtime Biden supporter, wrote in a scathing op-ed in the New York Times.

“He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020,” he continued. “He was the same guy we all saw at the debate

The actor stated at another point in the plea: “This is about age. Nothing more. But also nothing that can be undone. We are not going to win in November with this president.”

People like Stephen King, Rob Reiner, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings and Star Trek screenwriter Damon Lindelof all followed suit, despite the fact that they have all been Democrats for years.

Some celebrities, like Letterman, have remained loyal, however. The recently retired talker is joined by fellow A-listers, including Jack Black — whose Tenacious D bandmate has been criticized for taking a swipe at Trump following his near-assassination — and Barbra Streisand.

Former President Barack Obama came forward during his recent debate

Former President Barack Obama has emerged as the Biden team’s top surrogate, even deploying X to defend Biden against Donald Trump after his recent debate performance.

Letterman, who retired nearly a decade ago after 33 years, has yet to comment on the confirmed appearance, as other A-listers including George Clooney, The Rock and Cardi B have completely abandoned Biden.

Both were present at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles when Biden took the stage on June 16, as were superstars Elton John and Katy Perry a few weeks later in New York City after the debate.

Other stars, like Cardi B, weren’t so kind to the president’s lukewarm performance. The rapper and others, like Duane “The Rock” Johnson, announced their arrival shortly after skipping the upcoming election.

The New York musician in particular said she felt “betrayed” by the Biden administration.

Meanwhile, former President Barack Obama also attended the fundraiser for Biden on June 16, apparently in an effort to help Biden secure a second term.

The former president has since emerged as the campaign’s top surrogate, even going to X to defend Biden against Trump in the aftermath of the recent debate.

Meanwhile, videos from the end of the fundraiser circulated on social media, scrutinizing Biden’s physical and mental capabilities.

The president appeared frozen on stage for about seven seconds, but began walking when Obama placed his hand on Biden’s back.

A White House spokesman pushed back, calling the viral videos heavily edited and “cheap forgeries” made “in bad faith” to smear the Democrat.

Letterman, who retired in 2015 after 33 years on the program, has not yet commented on the confirmed appearance.
