Netflix gave viewers a glimpse of Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth on Thursday in a first trailer for the film Lonely Planet.
The film follows 57-year-old Dern as Katherine, an introverted writer who arrives at a prestigious writing retreat in Morocco.
While overcoming a creative block, she meets 34-year-old Owen, Liam’s son, and their relationship “develops into an intoxicating, life-changing love affair,” the synopsis reads.
Dern told People magazine about the story: ‘I love that the story focuses on connection and intimacy and the feeling of being truly seen.
“It’s a romance of self-discovery and of getting to know another person deeply.”

Hemsworth stressed, “The story isn’t just about the romance between two people; it’s also about personal growth, self-discovery and the complexities of relationships.
“The characters are relatable but flawed, and they grapple with the beauty and challenges of love in an environment that is visually stunning and culturally rich.”
He was very enthusiastic about his co-star, saying that Laura is “incredibly down to earth and generous.”
The Hollywood leading man, who was previously married to Miley Cyrus, added: “She has this incredible ability to elevate every scene with her emotional depth, while still making the entire set feel involved and supportive.”
He noted that the upcoming Netflix romance “reminded me why I love making movies,” explaining, “It’s not just about the work itself, but the connections you make with the people you share that journey with.”
Laura recalls her most memorable moment on the film set: “Liam giving me 87 olives and riding on the back of his motorbike.”
And the Big Little Lies actress described Hemsworth as a “protective champion and partner” throughout the filming process.

The sentiment is reminiscent of a scene in the trailer where Katherine and Owen share a sweet moment after she calls him out on following her on a day of sightseeing.
By candlelight he admits, “I just wanted to make sure you were safe.”
Looking dreamily into his eyes, she asks boldly, “Is that me?”
Speaking with TudumDern called their on-screen chemistry “pure magic.”
She said the Australian hunk “not only became a buddy and confidant through our Moroccan adventure, but also our shared desire [for] ‘Honesty and intimacy in all relationships, that moved me enormously.’

Speaking to Tudum, Dern called their on-screen chemistry “pure magic.”
Elsewhere in the conversation, the Oscar-winning singer said, “The dynamic between the younger man and the older, established writer intrigued me because it’s not just about romance — it’s about finding someone who really sees you and understands you, and that’s a very human and relatable thing.”
The film was written and directed by Susannah Grant, who wrote the script for Erin Brockovich.
In addition to Dern and Hemsworth Diana Silvers, the film also stars Younès Boucif, Adriano Giannini and Rachida Brakni.
Lonely Planet will premiere on the streaming platform on October 11.
