Passengers riding the London Underground stripped partially naked today to celebrate pantsless tube travel, which today returned to the capital for the first time since the pandemic in March 2020.

Hundreds of Sunday commuters joined in the no-pants fun, which began across the Atlantic in New York 20 years ago.

The Elizabeth Line, which opened last year, welcomed its first pantsless passengers, with hundreds traveling in their underwear for the annual event, which began in New York two decades ago.

Organized by The Stiff Upper Lip Society, the event saw people wearing smart office clothes on the upper half, with only underwear, shoes and socks on the lower half of their bodies.

The event is part of the No Pants Global Subway Ride, which began in New York in 2002 and has since spread to more than 60 cities around the world.

The quirky tradition was created by Improv Everywhere, a comedy performing arts group, in New York City in 2002.

“The mission started as a little prank with seven guys and has grown into an international celebration of silliness, with dozens of cities around the world participating each year,” says the Improv Everywhere website.

Photos taken during the eye-catching event show people casually riding subway trains nonchalantly removing their pants.

“As soon as the doors close at the stop before you, get up, take off your pants and put them in your backpack,” the group says.

‘If someone asks you why you took your pants off, tell them they were ‘getting awkward’ (or something).
