Loki season 2 episode 1 post-credits scene explained

Full spoilers follow for the first episode of Loki season 2.

Loki season 2 has made its way to Disney Plus – and yes, the first episode features a traditional Marvel Studios post-credits scene.

The Marvel Phase 5 TV show follows in the footsteps of many other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) productions with a tantalizing taste of what’s to come. And while the post-credits linger Loki‘s Season 2 premiere isn’t as shocking and/or crowd-pleasing as others in Marvel’s back catalog of end-credits scenes, but it’s still quite interesting nonetheless.

Before we get into what it means for future episodes, read the Loki season 2 review to get our full thoughts on the first four entries. Once you’re done, read on – there are major spoilers ahead, so watch the episode first if you haven’t already – to learn more about Episode 1’s post-credits scene.

Loki The first post-credit scene of Season 2 opens with viewers looking out onto a field of gold. Within moments, a Timedoor appears – the Time Variance Authority’s (TVA) way of moving on the so-called Sacred Timeline and its various branching realities. Out steps Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), a Loki variant who played together with the god of mischief in Loki season 1.

But wait, Sylvie is not with us again on the Sacred Timeline. As a pop-up message soon reveals, she traveled to Broxton, Oklahoma in 1982. It is clear that after killing He Who Remains – one of the variants of Kang the Conqueror – in the Citadel at the End of Time in LokiIn the season 1 finale, Sylvie feels like she’s ready for a vacation. And, um, what better place to visit than the twentieth largest state in the US? (I mean no disrespect to Oklahomans, I promise).

Anyway, Sylvie heads to a nearby town where she comes across the legendary restaurant chain McDonald’s. Understandably, she gets more than a few curious looks from the fast food chain’s customers as she walks up to the counter. After all, she’s still wearing her blood-splattered outfit after driving her sword into He Who Remains’ chest, so a few bemused looks are the least she deserves.

But we digress. Sylvie walks to the server behind the counter and asks: “How do I do this?”, in other words: how do I order the much-needed food. In response to the employee’s own question: “What do you want?”, Sylvie humorously replies: “Something that’s already dead. Not squirrels, possums or rats, or anything with a face.”

As the McDonald’s employee begins rattling off a list of the chain’s bestsellers, including Big Mac and Chicken McNuggets, Sylvie turns to the customers enjoying their meals. Considering what she’s been through over the years—being kidnapped by the TVA, encountering Loki, falling in love with him, and killing He Who Remains, among many other traumatic events—the mundanity of sitting in a McDonald’s, burger in hand, is makes her eyes blurry.

She seems to be at peace for the first time in a long time and responds to the server with the words: “I want to try everything”. Stunned, he replies, “…okay” before the screen goes black.

Ah, that would spoil too much too soon for you, dear reader. What I can However, it is true that Sylvie will eventually become a McDonald’s employee herself.

The official trailer for Loki season 2 includes several teasers (including one that appears to spoil a major plot point of season 2) and even a McDonald’s tie-in ad showed that Sylvie will work behind the counter once we (and Loki) have reunited her properly. Again, I won’t say anything else because it will spoil what’s going to happen in future episodes, but just know that Sylvie’s recruitment by McDonald’s isn’t a pointless subplot prior to her formal reintroduction into the MCU.
