Latest: Lizzo, 34, said the concept of cancel culture has been exploited to the point of ‘appropriation’ in a tweet on Sunday. She was photographed in Los Angeles last month.
The Grammy Award-winning artist, whose real name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson, said she hopes society “can get out of this and focus our outrage on the real issues.”
The Detroit native received messages from followers who agreed with her sentiments.
“That’s what they do,” said one user. They co-opt words and then twist their meanings. “Cancel Culture, Pro life, Woke, Groomer” All the words they use dilute their true meaning. It shows the fanaticism at the center of its movement. Them [don’t] matter what those [meant] and they control its meaning now.’
Another follower said that Lizzo had ‘a great take’ which is ‘very, very true’ as the frequent use of certain terms has diluted the principle behind them.

“The power is gone, and that is a real loss for marginalized peoples,” said the user. ‘Brings “shot” to mind. That’s a very real thing for people with a history of trauma. Now it’s a joke.
On Friday, Lizzo took to TikTok to voice her opinion on what she called a “tired” discussion “around bodies” that has no solution, reciting a list of comments she’s received about her person.
She said: ‘I’ve seen comments ranging from: ‘Oh my gosh, I liked you when you were fat, why did you lose weight?’ to “Oh my gosh why did you get a BBL? I liked your body before” to “Oh my gosh you are so big you need to lose weight but for your health” to “Oh my gosh you are so little , you need to get a ** ot ** ties or something” to “Oh my gosh, why did he do all that work? It’s too much work.”
Lizzo asked her followers: ‘Do you see the delirium? Do you realize that artists are not here to fit your beauty standards? Artists are here to make art. And this body is art.
The Truth Hurts artist said she’ll do whatever she wants “with this body,” adding that she wished “the comments would cost everyone money so we could see how much time we’re wasting on the wrong thing.” ‘
