A light aircraft carrying nine passengers, including a child, has crashed on an island in the Great Barrier Reef.

It is believed the plane overran a runway while taking off from Lizard Island, about 150 miles north of Cairns, and struck trees about 7.20am on Monday.

It is believed two of the nine passengers were injured, but a Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said this had yet to be confirmed.

Two rescue helicopters and an aircraft have been sent to the island to assess the situation.

A Queensland Police spokesperson said there appeared to be “no life-threatening injuries” sustained as a result of the crash.

The remote island is a luxury holiday destination for the rich and famous as it is home to an exclusive resort and holiday homes.

Those who reach the island, about 17 miles off the mainland coast, can take a 'scenic' flight from Cairns. Departing flights are also available.

The resort's website states that flights from the island depart daily at 12.25pm and 3.25pm, but 'private charters can also be arranged'.

More to come.
