While Meghan and Harry are greeted in Canada with a mixture of boos and cheers as they promote the Invictus Games, storm clouds follow them over their rebranding of Sussex.com, in the midst of the king’s cancer treatment.
Yet I can’t help but be enchanted by them.
Last night I watched Harry and Meghan’s plane, hoping for a glimpse of the couple stepping off the plane as if they were the Beatles.
What will she wear? Ripped jeans and flats or Parisian couture? Who will descend the stairs first?
Will Archie and Lili Sussex, as they are now known, be in tow? Will Harry be somber at formal events? Will Meghan dance?
Is George Clooney anywhere to be seen? Are there each great celebrities next to them?
Then, hurray, we saw the couple meeting athletes – the Games are for wounded, injured and sick military personnel – at the Whistler ski resort, where they will stay for two days. So effortlessly cool. Meghan looked relaxed, as if she were in a Tommy Hilfiger ad. Even Harry smiled.
Note the stream of antagonistic comments. The Sussexes, we’re told, took a mid-size private jet and $55,200 round-trip, which could have paid for 11 prosthetic limbs for amputees.
They booked a hotel room for $8,000 a night.
Why the need for two limousines…? Do they lead separate lives…? And so forth.
Some tweets even claimed that photos of Meghan had been quickly airbrushed.

As if we care. I’ve been studying these photos because I’m desperate for some winter glamor.
I like blow drying. Where is her cream puffer coat from? The white jeans? She beams positively. It’s exciting to see them, while yet another photo of a royal church (yawn) just makes me think, ‘Do people still do that?’
The reason so many of us are obsessed? This couple has star power.

Even if they not When you show up at an event – like the Super Bowl last Sunday – it’s global news.
When Meghan isn’t on the cover of British Vogue in honor of editor Edward Enninful’s very last issue, it makes headlines.
Well, Maya Jama was there, and she’s hosting Love Island! Would you like to sit next to a woman adjusting her thong?
(Coincidentally, only the women featured on his cover were invited, and Meghan had chosen not to have her face on the cover when she guest edited an edition.)
Even if there’s a misplaced comma on the couple’s new website, it’s news. Have you checked out the royal websites on this side of the pond?
No, I didn’t think so.
Why would you? They resemble the dreary official domains of the National Trust: unrecognizable and dull. Dear loyal subject, Tomorrow we wave, and the day after tomorrow we wave and unveil a plaque or plant a tree! Yes!
Yes, of course H&M made mistakes. Angry people. But that also applies to King Charles.
Edward, who is currently being driven away with his wife Sophie, once hosted a terrible game show.
He too was a ‘con man’ who tried to make TV shows but failed.
Why all the personal reactions, in print and on social media, about Harry losing his hair? Edward is about as attractive as Postman Pat.
Princess Anne is held up as a trouper, but she is as glamorous as Joyce Grenfell.
To be fair, the Royals have one enormous trick by not swallowing their pride and welcoming Harry and Meghan back into the fold.
If Harry had boarded the helicopter to Sandringham with his father last week, wouldn’t we all have felt a warm, fuzzy feeling deep inside?
If Charles and Wills were to welcome the Sussexes back into the fold, wouldn’t they seem magnanimous? H&M could share the burden and sprinkle some fairy dust.
To me, their new website is quite moving for its naivete, the couple’s blatant desire to make a difference.
It’s a big, shiny Valentine’s Day card that says: Please Love Us!
It’s not too late for the king – or William – to extend a hand of friendship, is it? To be the bigger person?
