Liz Cheney has condemned ousted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy for “elevating white supremacists and anti-Semites” as part of his leadership.
Cheney was defeated in a 2022 primary by Harriet Hageman in a race heavily influenced by her criticism of Donald Trump.
The daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney said McCarthy has confused the party by following Trump’s example.
“I wanted it to be surprising,” she told CNN. “You know, what we’ve seen is the result of the leadership decisions that Kevin McCarthy made after the 2020 election and certainly after January 6.”
“And you know, we’re looking the other way, given the kind of attack on our democracy that we’ve seen from Donald Trump and his allies in the House of Representatives.”
Former Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney on Sunday condemned ousted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy for “elevating white supremacists and anti-Semites” as part of his leadership
McCarthy was eventually removed from power and the House of Representatives has been led for weeks by a temporary speaker who can find a new leader.
While she did not name any specific Republican members as anti-Semites, she did name the chairman’s possible replacement, Jim Jordan — who has failed several times to gather the votes to win the job — as fermenting it.
“If we look the other way, given the kind of attack on our democracy we’ve seen from Donald Trump and his allies in the House of Representatives, including Jim Jordan; frankly elevate those members, some of whom are white supremacists, some of whom are anti-Semitic,” she said.
Cheney said it too CBS News On Sunday, she said she had not ruled out a possible run for president in 2024, telling CNN’s Jake Tapper that it couldn’t be Trump anyway.
“He can’t be the next president,” she said. “If so, he will do all the things he tried to do but was stopped from doing by responsible people around him at the Justice Department, at the White House counsel’s office. There will be no guardrails and everyone has been warned.’
She called Trump “the most dangerous threat we face as a nation.”
Cheney is staunchly anti-Trump and was one of only two Republicans to serve on the select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol. She has repeatedly spoken out against the former president — both when he was in power as after his departure.
In June, the ex-lawmaker blamed American voters for Trump’s election and said it was up to the federal electorate to put “more serious” people to work in future elections.

I don’t look at it through the lens of, you know, is this what I should do or what I shouldn’t do,” Cheney said Monday at an event with the 92nd Street Y New York Global Center for Culture and Arts when asked about the release of an offer.
‘I look at it through the lens of: how do we choose serious people? And I think electing serious people cannot be biased,” she added.
“What we have done in our politics is create a situation where we elect idiots.”
Cheney joined nine other lawmakers in voting for Trump’s second impeachment after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.
She has since become a very outspoken critic of the former president, which led to Cheney losing her House of Representatives seat in Congress representing deep-red Trump country in Wyoming.
Her main priority since her departure has been to prevent Trump from ever again gaining a position of power in the government.
