Liverpool’s signing of Moises Caicedo has Jurgen Klopp’s quotes from 2016 haunting him – as fans dig them up after the Reds agreed to the fifth biggest transfer of all time

Jürgen Klopp finds his own words haunting him as Liverpool look to secure a record £110 million transfer for Moises Caicedo from Brighton.

The 21-year-old looks set to join Klopp’s Reds in the North West of England as Liverpool have outbid Chelsea for the Ecuadorian midfielder, offering to make Caicedo the sixth most expensive player in history.

But the move has more than a hint of irony, after Klopp’s words resurfaced in 2016, when Manchester United spent £100 million to secure Paul Pogba’s services.

In 2016, Klopp said: “If you bring in one player for £100 million and he gets injured, it all goes down the chimney.

“The day this is football, I will no longer have a job, because the game is about playing together.

That’s how everyone in football understands it. You always want the best, but building the group is necessary to be successful.

Other clubs can spend more money and get top players.

‘I want to do it differently. I would even do it differently if I could spend that money.

“I’m not exactly sure how much money we could spend, because nobody said to me, ‘No, you can’t do that.’

“If I spend money, it’s because I’m trying to build a team, a real team. Barcelona did. You can win championships, you can win titles, but there’s a way you want it.’

Despite Klopp’s previous claim that he would be ‘out of a job’, he appears to be preparing for the start of the new season as usual – but this has united rival Premier League fans to mock Klopp for his statements seven years ago.

A user of X (e.g. Twitter) – a Chelsea fan – shared a sample of the Mail Sport headline, writing: ‘This has aged well. Jurgen Klopp come out!”, to which another replied, “If you can’t beat them… join them,” alongside a trio of crying and laughing facial emojis.

A Man United fan responded by saying: ‘Klopp should live up to his words and hand in a letter of resignation today.’

Another said, “I’d actually like a magazine to remind him of this statement in his next press release.”

After years of criticism aimed at Liverpool’s owners for not spending much, the reverse seems to be happening during the current off-season, with Dominik Szoboszlai signed for £60 million from RB Leipzig and Alexis Mac Allister bought from Brighton for £35 million.

This prompted someone to say: ‘Do Liverpool fans still want the FSG group out? Their owners have just signed a UK record, which is now £250 million in signatures on 3 players in one window alone, Klopp is just a checkbook manager and their fans must forever remain silent about other clubs spending.

But one Reds fan felt the club had been extremely lucky to get a new set of players in the middle of the park for the amount they spent this summer.

They wrote: ‘How on earth did we get Mac Allister, Szoboszlai and Caicedo for £205m, unbelievable business, crazy midfield rebuild.’

Liverpool’s Premier League campaign starts away from Chelsea, the club they beat to sign Caicedo, although it’s not yet clear what role the Ecuadorian would play on Sunday.
