Liverpool’s bid to overturn Curtis Jones’ red card during Saturday’s controversial Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur has been rejected.

The 22-year-old will serve a three-match suspension after being sent off for a high tackle on Yves Bissouma.

Referee Simon Hooper had initially given Jones a yellow for the clumsy challenge, but he upgraded to red after watching it on the on-field monitor.

The Reds subsequently appealed the decision, but have since confirmed they did so without success.

A statement from the club said: ‘Curtis Jones will serve a three-match Premier League ban after an appeal against the red card he received at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday was unsuccessful.’

As a result, Jones will miss Liverpool’s home games against Brighton & Hove Albion, Everton and Nottingham Forest this month.

However, he will be available for Wednesday night’s Europa League match against Belgian side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise and for their upcoming meeting with Toulouse on October 26.

Jones’ challenge caused much debate across the football world. Gary Neville was among those who strongly disagreed with the call.

‘No no no. “I know when you do someone, I’ve done it myself, he wasn’t there to do anyone,” he said in Sky Sports commentary.

‘They show the ending movement which looks bad. But that’s not how it ended there, his foot just slipped off the ball.

Liverpool appealed the decision, but the Reds were unsuccessful

“It’s not a red card, but he will get one and that will probably ruin the match.”

Meanwhile, former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara commented: “It’s a shocking challenge. A leg-breaker.”

Liverpool ended the game with nine men after Diogo Jota was sent off for a second bookable offence.

The 26-year-old will serve a one-match ban and will therefore be unavailable for Liverpool’s visit to the south coast on Sunday.

In total, the Merseyside club picked up eight tickets at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last weekend, leading to a £25,000 fine – the usual penalty for any side collecting six or more tickets in a single match.

Spurs have not been penalized as they received just five bookings.
