Virgil van Dijk let Gary Neville down when he joked that Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher wouldn’t even be in their current roster – he said he would be in the stands instead.
The Dutchman was a guest on Gary Neville’s the overlap in which he spoke on a range of topics, including some of his current teammates, and rival players, including Kevin de Bruyne and Lisandro Martinez.
During the interview, Neville asked Van Dijk if Carragher would make the current Liverpool squad.

After Van Dijk had asked Marcel whether he meant the starting eleven or the team as a whole, Marcel laughed and said: ‘You don’t have him in the eleven, do you?’
Van Dijk responded: ‘Not even in the first 20. He will be in the stands.’
Neville burst out laughing at the knocking down of his fellow Sky Sports pundit and asked Van Dijk if he meant it, to which the amused Dutchman replied ‘yes’.
Carragher posted this response to Van Dijk’s comments showing that Pepe Reina, who played with the Liverpool legend, had more clean sheets than Alisson who plays with the Dutchman
One person who wasn’t so amused was Carragher after clips of the moment went viral on the Overlap.
Carragher on Instagram said he would 100% make Liverpool’s current side
He posted a statistic on Twitter showing that current Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has just 90 clean sheets in his first 200 games, compared to Pepe Reina who had 102.
Carragher was the leader of Liverpool’s defense when Reina was caught between the sticks at Anfield and clearly insinuated that he was instrumental in helping the Reds keep more clean sheets with the Spaniard in goal than Van Dijk has while protecting Alisson.
He also shared the clip on his Instagram story in which he posted an angry emoji and a caption suggesting he would make ‘100%’ the current Liverpool team.
Carragher is widely regarded as one of Liverpool’s greatest central defenders of all time, and is second on the club’s record attendance list having made 737 appearances between 1996 and his retirement in 2013.
Van Dijk has been one of the club’s most influential signings since leaving Southampton in January 2018 for £75million.
He, along with Alisson’s signing that summer, made Liverpool a formidable defense force, leading them to win the Champions League and Premier League in the following seasons.
Van Dijk has had a hard time so far this season, which has led to some criticism from Carragher.

The intensity of the 30-year-old has been questioned by Carragher after their defeat to Manchester United earlier this season.
He has also praised the Dutch defender, saying his performance in the 1-0 win over Man City was the ‘best’ he has ever produced for the club.
During the Overlap, Van Dijk revealed that he wanted to play with current team-mate Andrew Robertson when he played at Celtic and the Scottish fullback at Dundee United.
He also claimed that both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez would have to make the plane to Qatar for Gareth Southgate.
