Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has come under fire on social media from Muslim fans after he posted a photo of his family next to a Christmas tree.

Salah, who is Muslim, captioned the photo with ‘#MerryChristmas’ on his Twitter and Instagram accounts.

The 30-year-old and his family – wife Magi and daughters Makka and Kayan – posed in matching pajamas for their traditional Christmas post.

Mohamed Salah posted the photo with his family on his social media on Christmas Eve.

Muslims do not traditionally celebrate Christmas, but some do participate in the festivities that take place during the Christian holiday.

Salah’s tweet has been criticized by Muslim supporters, with one stating: “I will unfollow you and stop supporting Liverpool because you are celebrating Christmas with Christians.”

Another said: ‘I’ve been a Liverpool fan since I was born but I’ll stop supporting the club because you’re celebrating Christmas with Christians.’ You just lost me as a fan Mo Salah. Goodbye!’

Some fans criticized the 30-year-old Liverpool star for his Christmas tree tweet

‘Mo Salah, I loved you as a Real Madrid player. I saw you as an excellent player and you always inspired me. However, after this tweet, I can no longer see you as my role model. you disappointed me If you don’t delete this tweet, I will have to unfollow you,” said a third.

Others defended the Egyptian striker, with one fan describing him as the ‘African GOAT’.

Another fan said: ‘The most anticipated Christmas post annually. Merry Christmas Mo.’

Others claim that Salah’s annual Christmas post is a curse on Liverpool. After he put up a similar image on social media in 2020, the Reds failed to win a game at Anfield for eight games in a row.

In 2021, just days after posting a Christmas picture on his social media, the Egyptian missed a penalty and an open goal against Leicester before Man City won the title.

Salah played the full 90 minutes and scored. Liverpool returned to competitive action after the World Cup break in a 3-2 loss to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup round of 16 on Thursday.

He is expected to start for Jurgen Klopp’s men in their first Premier League game since the World Cup, the trip to Aston Villa on Boxing Day.
