Liverpool are reportedly set to meet with Ruben Amorim’s agent as the Sporting Lisbon boss moves closer to the club’s new manager.

The hunt to find a successor to Jurgen Klopp has been on since the German shocked the sporting world by announcing in January that he would step down at the end of the season.

Xabi Alonso initially appeared to be the club’s number one candidate, while his Bayer Leverkusen side were flying high in the Bundesliga and on course for a first-ever league title.

However, the Spaniard dropped a bombshell on his old club last month after it became known that he plans to stay at the BayArena.

As such, attention has focused on Amorim, who reportedly scored highly on Liverpool’s data tests.

This is evident from a report by the Portuguese football journalist Pedro SepulvedaA meeting between the two parties will take place on Monday to negotiate the final terms of his future contract.

However, Sepulveda also noted that the club has yet to formally approach Sporting about a move to Amorim.

When asked earlier this week about speculation linking him with a move, the 39-year-old former midfielder refused to commit his future to the Portuguese club.

‘No, I can’t guarantee that. I don’t want to talk too much about my future. But I will not argue or put pressure on Sporting, I owe the club a lot.’

Mail Sport reported on Friday that Amorim is willing to consider approaches from Premier League teams, with a number of clubs said to be eyeing him.

After short spells at Casa Pia and Braga following the end of his playing career, Amorim was appointed sports manager in March 2020.
