Liverpool mocked by rival fans in series of memes after shock loss to Atalanta… as supporters take aim at outgoing manager Jurgen Klopp and Virgil Van Dijk following disastrous week: ‘Don’t say we didn’t warn you!’

Rival fans have taken to social media to mock Liverpool following the Reds’ shock loss to Atalanta on Thursday night.

Liverpool produced perhaps one of their worst performances under Jurgen Klopp as they lost 3-0 to the Italian side at Anfield in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final.

It was an outcome that few saw coming. Supporters were all but booked for a thrilling final between Klopp’s side and Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen in Dublin next month, although that now seems like mere fantasy.

The defeat came just four days after their draw against rivals Manchester United on Sunday afternoon, which threatened to derail their league title.

Following the loss to Atalanta, rival fans – most notably the Red Devils – took to social media to poke fun at Klopp’s side, with a plethora of memes appearing online.

“The boy behind Liverpool’s demise, show my star boy some respect,” one fan posted on X, formerly Twitter, accompanied by two photos of teenage sensation Kobbie Mainoo – after his goal against the Reds last week.

‘Manchester United broke Liverpool. You like it,” another added.

A third United fan posted: ‘Klopp leaves Liverpool without beating Ten Hag once’, accompanied by a series of laughing emojis and Klopp’s face edited onto a baby held by Ten Hag.

More supporters pointed out that the clash was Klopp’s last as manager after eight years in charge, and it apparently did not go entirely to plan.

After sensationally winning the Carabao Cup earlier this year with an injury-hit side, there was hope of winning the quadruple for Liverpool, with the FA Cup, Europa League and Premier League still to play.

However, a frustrating FA Cup exit to United followed, before drawing with the Red Devils in the competition and then losing to Atalanta in Europe.

“Hope Klopp’s farewell tour isn’t just with the carabao cup for Liverpool Football Club before we say goodbye,” one fan posted on X, accompanied by a video of a Klopp lookalike struggling on the ground in frustration.

Another wrote: ‘Good morning Liverpool fans. How is Klopp’s Quadruple season going? This is where you run out of tears. Don’t say we didn’t warn you’, shared with Liverpool’s tough schedule.

A third, aimed at captain Virgil van Dijk, wrote: “Van Dijk tries to stop that cross for the second goal with his aura,” accompanied by a video of WWE’s The Rock.

The Reds face a tough task to turn around the tie in Italy next week, but will be backed to do so after making a number of memorable comebacks in Europe during Klopp’s reign.

In the Premier League, they are second in the table, behind Arsenal on goal difference with seven games left to play.

This weekend they take on Crystal Palace at Anfield, hoping to regain top spot, while reigning champions Manchester City are now favorites to take the title.
