Liverpool have made a surprise move for 30-year-old Stuttgart midfielder Wataru Endo and have rekindled interest in Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch.

Japan’s combative captain Endo is well known to Liverpool sporting director Jorge Schmadtke and can also play as a centre-back. He has to go to Merseyside for a medical.

Gravenberch, 21, is open to leaving as he wants to play more regularly. Bayern have so far resisted the sale, but they are overloaded with midfielders and under pressure to make money back after the signing of Harry Kane.

Liverpool have also requested Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat and Crystal Palace’s Cheick Doucoure as they work through goals in midfield.

Endo has less than a year left on contract in Stuttgart and should be available for a low price. He made 133 appearances for Stuttgart since joining the club, initially on loan, from Sint-Truiden.

Gravenberch came over from Ajax last year with a five-year contract, but could now leave.

Jurgen Klopp’s side had accepted a £111 million offer for Moises Caicedo, but the midfielder opted to join Chelsea from Brighton instead.

Liverpool also looked set to sign Romeo Lavia from Southampton, but the talented youngster is set to move to Chelsea instead.

Klopp had to make midfield purchases after Fabinho joined Al-Ittihad and Jordan Henderson signed from Al-Ettifaq.

Liverpool have brought in two creative players this summer, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, but need a defensive midfielder and Endo will help them achieve that.
