A Liverpool legend has ruled Roberto de Zerbi out of the race to replace Jurgen Klopp by insisting the Reds decision-makers would not ‘go anywhere near’ the Italian.

The Brighton boss is among the names in the running to succeed Klopp at Anfield after the German announced the shock decision to leave the club at the end of the season.

Current Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim is favorite to take over Liverpool in the summer after Xabi Alonso made the decision to stay at Bayer Leverkusen, but De Zerbi has also been mentioned as a potential successor.

De Zerbi is unsure whether he will stay at Brighton for another season, amid a difficult and inconsistent season for the Seagulls.

But one Anfield icon does not believe the 44-year-old is a good fit for the club and slammed De Zerbi for dismissing discussions linking him with a move as ‘getting carried away’.

Mark Lawrenson wrote himself into Liverpool history by making 347 appearances for the club in the 1980s, winning numerous top honors along the way.

The 66-year-old has given his verdict on the Premier League leaders’ search for a new manager who can continue Klopp’s legacy.

“I thought Roberto de Zerbi was a bit naughty last week when he said he wants more players,” he told the club. Paddy power.

“Brighton gave him his big performance, and he did very, very well. But once you go that route and ask for more players, and maybe his agent talks to other clubs, I don’t think Liverpool will get anywhere near him.

‘He’s a good manager, but I think he gets carried away. Brighton has not had a particularly good season.

‘He didn’t bother with the extra games and blamed it on not having enough players. De Zerbi will not be going to Liverpool, and he may have ousted one or two potential club owners,” he added.

De Zerbi put himself on the radar of top clubs across Europe after leading Brighton to sixth place in the Premier League last season and securing a place in the ongoing Europa League competition in his debut year.

However, results have fallen during his second season, with the club currently ninth in the English top flight.
