Liverpool fans are warned they risk a three-year stadium ban if they are caught making homophobic chants, and the Reds make a public announcement during the draw with Chelsea.

  • Offensive chants went unheard after Liverpool announcement

Liverpool warned fans during Saturday’s game against Chelsea that they risked a three-year stadium ban if they were caught making homophobic chants, writes Joe Bernstein.

The Anfield club took the unusual step of making a Tannoy announcement during the game after receiving reports of discriminatory abuse from inside the pitch.

Authorities are clamping down on chants by opposition fans such as “Chelsea rent boy” and Saturday’s message appears to have been taken on board without audible songs of that nature.

The warning was broadcast over the public address system after 28 minutes saying Liverpool would not tolerate discriminatory language and vowing to use security cameras and punish those guilty by imposing stadium bans of up to three years.

Soccer is trying to tackle the problem of foul language inside stadiums. Nottingham Forest investigated alleged chants by their fans against Chelsea earlier in the season and Manchester United supporters came under fire for chanting the same homophobic slur against Everton’s former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard.
