Heavy rains batter Delhi, five dead, flooding, traffic jams cause chaos

Five persons succumbed to rain-related incidents in Delhi on Friday, June 28, as monsoon swept across the national capital with fury early in the morning. Rain lashed the city with the highest rainfall in a single day in June in 88 years, bringing Delhi to a standstill with flooded streets, traffic chaos and several commuters stranded on the roads. Severe waterlogging on Delhi roads led to long and painful traffic jams. The deceased included a taxi driver who died after a portion of a canopy at Delhi’s IGI airport collapsed on cars after rain. Flight operations at Terminal-1 of the Delhi airport were suspended following the incident. A political row ensued over the tragedy with BJP and Congress blaming each other for the collapse of the structure.
