LIV Golf fans charged staggering amounts for Airbnb accommodation ahead of Adelaide event

Adelaide accommodation providers have had another field day at the expense of sports fans, with staggering prizes across the board ahead of the rebellious LIV Golf Tournament this weekend.

On the back of more than 220,000 footy fans heading into Adelaide for the AFL’s Gather Round, 63,000 golf nuts are expected to pile up at the Grange Golf Club for the LIV tournament.

And with a large majority of them coming from overseas or interstate, it’s seen as a “good spending, valuable” group – and they’ll have to be able to afford to keep a roof over their heads.

The Stamford Grand in Glenelg, a beachside suburb, has only three rooms left for the standard double bed, which will cost you $828 for two nights, according to booking.com, while at the Mayfair in the CBD, a similar room costs $1127 for Friday and Saturday night.

The Atura hotel at Adelaide Airport costs $894 for a two-night stay in a double room, while the Crowne Plaza in the CBD costs $898.

The high prices and low availability have also extended to AirBnb properties that are outdated, overpriced, or very modest suburban homes — or all three.

As revealed in a Daily Mail Australia article ahead of Gather Round, an example of this was an eight-bedroom brick house in North Brighton, a 30-minute drive from the track.

It was advertised at an eye-watering $19,431 for three nights, which didn’t seem to have been included, and despite being slashed to $8119 for two nights this weekend, it’s still at a staggering price.

A two-bedroom house around the corner from the lane costs fans $2772, while a room in Glenelg that shares a bathroom costs $1124.

Another offer was for a private room in a four-bedroom house on the edge of the CBD, although visitors will have to share a bathroom and pay an additional fee for laundry, parking, heating, air conditioning and internet. An $800 cleaning fee is part of the price.

Photos in the listing show a bare room with just a mattress covered with a plastic sheet, a small bedside table and a simple desk.

You have to pay $1732 to stay there for two nights, with the prime location a big draw.

Hotel industry insider Peter Hurley said a very different demographic of sports fans will come to Adelaide to see Aussie stars like Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman play in Greg Norman’s Rebel league.

“There will probably be fewer families — this will be a high-spending, high-value group,” he told the Adelaide advertiser.

“We should be close to 100 percent capacity for the event this weekend, but it will be a slightly different market, there will be a lot more internationals for it.

“They won’t be after cafeteria meals, they’ll dine in style and spend a lot of money — if they can see the value.”

It’s bound to be a wild few days for golf enthusiasts.

A photo of the so-called ‘Party Hole’ at the 12th hole Grange Golf Club shows the fairway lined with bleachers and a watering hole for merry revelers at the end, sure to go off.

The course was in fact the stage for Norman’s first ever professional win – the 1976 West Lakes Classic – and is a picture of serenity, sandwiched between Adelaide CBD and the beach.

South Australia’s Tourism Minister Zoe Bettison said the coup of the draw of the wildly popular LIV tournament was huge for the state.
