England again missed out on the European Championship title on Sunday evening as Spain beat the Three Lions 2-1 in Berlin thanks to a late goal from Mikel Oyarzabal.
Spain took the lead early in the second half through Nico Williams, with substitute Cole Palmer scoring a stunning equaliser from outside the penalty area, raising hopes of a comeback win.
But Spain, who were the better team overall that night, scored the decisive goal through Oyarzabal in the 86th minute, causing further grief for Gareth Southgate and the Three Lions.
In today’s episode, the final instalment of ‘It’s All Kicking Off: Euros Daily’, Craig Hope and Sami Mokbel join presenter Ian Ladyman to discuss England’s performance following another disappointing defeat in a major final.
Hope continued to insist that England’s big players failed to show up for the big occasion, saying: “I think Southgate was deserved by the performances of Harry Kane, Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice. I was at the merit marks tonight, I’ll tell you what they got: 4, 5, 5 and 6. And those four players are worth over £500m between them.
‘Big players didn’t show up. When I see Gareth getting a beating on social media, listen, he hasn’t had the best tournament, he’s been frozen in moments in games and had to rely on luck in games, but tonight I think that big quartet didn’t show up for him.’
Listen to all that in today’s episode and ask whether Southgate should remain England manager.
