Martinez wrote, “Not the way I imagined a very special season would end, but sometimes we encounter obstacles along the way that we have to overcome to make ourselves stronger and we learn from that. I know I will be back very soon to go for more.
In the meantime, I will continue to support all my teammates to achieve our goals.
Lisandro Martinez says ‘sometimes we face obstacles’ after being ruled out for this season
The Argentinian defender has been almost always present in the rear of Man United this season
“The amount of messages and support I have received has been amazing, they are giving me strength and encouragement at this time. Many, many thanks to all of you from the bottom of my heart.”
The club had previously issued a statement confirming the extent of the problem. It read: “Lisandro Martinez is ruled out for the remainder of the season after breaking a metatarsal bone in his foot.
“However, the Argentine defender is expected to make a full recovery in time to be ready for the start of next season.”
Martinez has formed a good partnership in central defense with Raphael Varane this season
As well as winning the World Cup with Argentina in December, Martinez has been almost ever present in defence, making 45 Man United appearances.
It followed a £48.5 million move from Dutch club Ajax last summer, and the 25-year-old has proven he can handle the Premier League despite his height.
Manchester United may have to resort to a heavily modified backline for their remaining fixtures, starting with the trip to Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
Raphael Varane, Martinez’s usual partner at centre-back, will also miss several weeks of action, so Erik ten Hag is likely to turn to Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof to cover the center of the defensive line.
