Lisa Wilkinson shares a touching moment with rock star Rod Stewart as the pair bond over their late fathers on The Project
Rod Stewart returns to Australia next year for another tour with Cyndi Lauper.
And during an interview on Channel 10’s The Project to promote the tour, the rock legend eventually bonded with host Lisa Wilkinson over the loss of their fathers.
Lisa, 62, lost her father Ray in 1990 – the same year that Rod’s father Robert “Bob” Stewart passed away.

“My father was a jazz musician, he played double bass,” Lisa told the British hitmaker.
“Is he still with us?” Rob asked, before Lisa revealed that Ray had passed away.
“No, unfortunately not,” she said. ‘But he gave up making music when he got married. I think he decided he had to be a good, sincere citizen, but music lived in his soul for the rest of his life.”

Rod was stunned to learn that Ray had given up on the music and replied, ‘Oh man, that’s so sad he wrapped it up. How long has he been gone?’
“We lost him in 1990,” Lisa replied, before a stunned Rod exclaimed, “Same year as my dad!”
Rod then turned his head to the sky and shouted, “Ray! Good luck up there mate. I hope you still play bass!’

After sharing a laugh, Rod said he wanted to have a “drink for Ray” with Lisa backstage on his tour next year.
Lisa’s father lost his battle with cancer in May 1990.
Recalling her late father in 2019, the host of The Project said she felt like her “world had ended” when he died.

“When someone you love so unconditionally, so completely, and who loves you again in a way that you know no other man will ever die, breaks not only your heart, but also your sense of meaning,” she wrote. Instagram at the time.
“All the stories we tell ourselves, all the comforting clichés, disintegrate in the face of complete and permanent loss,” she continued.
“When my beautiful father, Ray Wilkinson, died nearly 30 years ago, I thought my world had ended.”

Twenty-eight years after her father’s death, Lisa’s mother Beryl passed away in March 2018.
Dolly’s former editor previously revealed that she met her now-husband Peter in a Channel Nine makeup room just six days after her father’s death.
They are parents to three children – daughter Billi, and sons Louis and Jake.
