Olympic swimmer Lisa Curry reveals she didn’t start menstruating until she was 18 and took birth control pills to avoid menstruating during competitions

Lisa Curry has revealed that she was a late bloomer and didn’t start menstruating until she was 18.

The former competitive swimmer tells Nine honey that she doesn’t know why there was such a long delay.

“I was a late starter. I remember my teammates telling me I must have been pregnant. I was like, ‘I can’t be pregnant. I haven’t had sex!'” the 60-year-old said.

The average age a girl gets her first period is about 12 years old, but the timeline can vary.

The three-time Olympian says the absence of periods was “lucky” as she trained in the pool nearly 10 times a week.

Later, the athlete took hormonal birth control to delay her period while she was competing.

“You don’t want to race a lot the day before your period,” she said, adding that she wanted to avoid backaches, cramps and moodiness.

“You don’t want to race with that feeling,” Lisa said, explaining that she had no lasting hormonal or fertility problems.

The swimming champion won 15 gold medals during her international career, plus seven silver and eight bronze.

It comes after Lisa revealed that she scattered her daughter Jaimi’s ashes in scenic locations around the world.

Last year, she posted the bittersweet video to Instagram of her releasing some of her daughter’s ashes under a tree in Canada’s snowy Yukon mountains.

Jaimi passed away in September 2020 after a long battle with alcohol addiction and an eating disorder. She was 33.

Two years later, Lisa lost her mother Pat.
