Lioness Leah Williamson hugs best pal Alex Scott just 48 hours before World Cup-wrecking injury

Lioness Leah Williamson’s hug for best friend Alex Scott: Friends enjoy a glass of bubbly in the sun just 48 hours before the injury that shattered her World Cup dream

She’s rarely left our television screens lately, but sports presenter Alex Scott managed to find time for a glass of bubbly in the sun with her best friend Leah Williamson.

With two glasses of prosecco in hand, Ms Scott was seen giggling with another friend before the England women’s football captain joined them on Monday afternoon.

Dressed in a lime green three-piece Michael Kors suit and Nike Air Jordan sneakers, the Football Focus host called out to Lioness Ms Williamson before giving her an excited hug as she arrived at the Princess of Wales pub in Primrose Hill, north London.

Friends of the three women said they decided to have an “impromptu” drink while the sun was shining.

Meanwhile, an onlooker said, “Alex was laughing while enjoying the sun with her friend, and then Leah arrived.

Alex was delighted, she raised her hand and beckoned to her. It certainly looked nice in the sun.’

But their happiness was short-lived, as just over 48 hours later, the England captain’s World Cup dream fell to pieces after she tore the ligaments in her knee while playing for Arsenal in a Women’s Super League clash with Manchester on Wednesday United.

The injury has ruled her out of this summer’s World Cup in Australia, which kicks off on July 20.

On social media, Ms Williamson said: ‘I had my tears and made my peace with it the night it happened, and since then I’ve been following the steps I’ve been told, to help myself the best I can in the short and long term.

“Ultimately I think it’s just my time. In the past few years alone, I’ve watched teammates beat serious illness and adversity with the biggest smile on their faces.

“I also have the perspective that there are much bigger problems globally and so my circumstances right now are just that, indirectly, and I’ve seen much worse.”

Ms Scott, 38, and Ms Williamson, 26, have been best friends for over two years after meeting on the women’s soccer circuit.

They can be seen together regularly at show business events, including the Brits in February and the GQ awards in November.

And last summer, following England’s Euro semi-final victory, Mrs Williamson – hailed as one of the best players in the tournament which the Lionesses eventually won – and Mrs Scott were seen blowing kisses while the television presenter worked as an expert for the BBC.

Ms. Williamson signed a major deal with Italian fashion house Gucci last year and is regularly seen with the label at show business parties.

She also has a lucrative endorsement deal with Nike and previously with Pepsi, and released her “life guide” book You Have The Power earlier this year.
