Messi, considered by many to be the greatest footballer in history, traveled to Foxborough with Inter Miami this weekend as Tata Martino’s men took on the Revolution in their latest MLS outing.

And while Argentina’s World Cup-winning captain was in town, a record number of supporters filled Gillette Stadium hoping to see a genius at work.

According to the Revolution, 65,612 fans were in the house for their game against Miami on Saturday – the largest home crowd in team history.

Just 40 seconds in, they were treated to a surprise early opener as Tomas Chancalay took advantage of a defensive mishap from Miami to fire New England ahead.

However, Messi exerted his dominance as he leveled the visitors 31 minutes later with a deadly close-range finish.

The 36-year-old first collected Robbie Taylor’s pass inside the penalty area, before taking a touch from his feet and tucking the ball home to make it 1-1.

Just over 20 minutes into the second half, the 65,000-strong New England crowd was left purring over Messi again as he teamed up with fellow Barcelona legend Sergio Busquets to put Miami ahead.

Busquets picked out his famous teammate with an inch-perfect pass in the 67th minute, allowing him to fire the ball past Henrich Ravas and into the back of the net.

After flocking to the Gillette Stadium for a slice of history, the home fans were treated to a two-goal Messi masterclass that evening.

Miami eventually cruised to a comfortable 4-1 victory thanks to later goals from Benjamin Cremaschi and substitute Luis Suarez.

Messi has now scored nine goals in seven MLS games for Inter this season, helping his team to a three-point lead at the top of the Eastern Conference.

Next up for the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is the visit of New York Red Bulls to Chase Stadium next Saturday.
