Another book chapter on Lionel Messi’s MLS career features a fantastic comeback to beat FC Dallas – and he’s already drawing comparisons to American sports stars.
While remarking in awe at Messi’s comeback from 4-2 to a 4-4 draw – and then winning the game on penalties, Apple TV’s Taylor Twellman made a comparison to NFL legend Tom Brady.
Twellman pointed to a strange own goal scored by Dallas defender Marco Farfan at the end of a Messi free kick to cut the deficit in half.
The longtime MLS commentator said that, in addition to sheer star power, Miami “also allows the opposition to score worldly goals, like Marco Farfan. I don’t know what I saw – and they just let you crumble.
“It’s eerily similar to other sports: when the big ones come in, they force you to do things that are not in your element. You feel uncomfortable doing that.

Twellman said Messi’s impact on the opposition to make mistakes is similar to that of Tom Brady
Messi scored two goals that night, including a dramatic free kick to force penalties
The New England Patriots did this every time. People would see a ghost if (Bill) Belichick and Brady showed up.
“In the four games (Messi’s played) every time someone (from the opponent) has seen a ghost because Messi is on the other side.”
Oddly, this isn’t the first comparison to an American sport “GOAT” Messi had today.
Earlier on Sunday, FC Dallas owner Dan Hunt compared Messi to NBA legend Michael Jordan.
Revealing he was looking forward to seeing Messi play, Hunt said: “You’re looking at one of the two greatest players of all time in that experience. So yes, this is a great moment for FC Dallas.”
Well, Hunt certainly saw what Messi is capable of after the Argentine essentially forced that Farfan own goal before scoring a dramatic free-kick to tie the game.
Messi and Miami would eventually win on penalties 5-3 to progress to the quarter-finals.
