There is very little left for Lionel Messi to achieve on a football field.

The Argentine has a staggering 12 league titles to his name with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, has won the Champions League four times and has led Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022.

Just last month, Messi received his eighth Ballon d’Or, the latest record in an extraordinary career.

But there is a curious gap in the 36-year-old’s stellar CV as Messi has never scored directly from a corner in his professional career.

The Argentinian came agonizingly close to closing the gap on his CV on Monday evening during Inter Miami’s 1-0 defeat in a friendly against FC Dallas.

When Miami won a corner eight minutes into the match, Messi took it and only a desperate save from Dallas goalkeeper Maarten Paes prevented him from scoring.

The former Barcelona and PSG star had previously attempted an ‘Olimpico’ – as goals straight from corners are colloquially described – when Argentina faced Paraguay in a World Cup qualifier last October.

Messi came close again, but his effort hit the post.

Argentina had a 1-0 win thanks to a goal from Nicolas Otamendi, but Messi found himself on the losing side on Monday night as Dallas triumphed by the same scoreline thanks to Jesus Ferreira’s goal in the third minute.

Messi has never scored directly from a corner in his entire career

Messi has had a great start to his career in the United States after joining Inter Miami from Paris Saint-Germain in June.

The 36-year-old scored Eleven goals in fourteen games lead Miami to the Leagues Cup, the club’s first trophy.

Messi has been reunited in Florida with former Barcelona teammates Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Luis Suarez.

The Uruguayan signed for Inter Miami just before Christmas but is yet to open his account for the MLS club, who have scored zero points in their two pre-season games so far.
