Striking workers at a Santa Monica hotel are asking Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami teammates to stay away from the establishment this weekend while the team visits LAFC.
Workers at the Fairmont Miramar in Los Angeles began protesting Wednesday, joining thousands of hotel workers across the region who have gone on strike this summer in search of better wages amid rising housing costs.
And earlier this month, hotel security began “violent attacks against their own employees,” according to a statement from Unite Here Local 11, a union representing workers.
A spokesperson for the organization told Mail Sport that the hotel had informed its employees that Inter Miami was staying there this weekend.
Unite Here Local 11 released the following statement calling on Messi and his team not to stay at the hotel.
Lionel Messi is urged by Fairmont Miramar hotel employees to avoid the establishment
Rooms at the Fairmont Miramar in Santa Monica start at around $500 per night
“We have been informed that Inter Miami CF and the Great Lionel Messi are coming to Los Angeles this week for a game against LAFC on Sunday. Workers went on strike this morning at 13 hotels, including the Fairmont Miramar,” the statement begins.
“Just two weeks ago, Fairmont Miramar employees called for a boycott of their hotel after hotel security guards were videotaped violently assaulting their own employees as they attempted to set up a picket line.
“As housekeepers, cooks, porters and servants, we ask Lionel Messi and his teammates to stand in solidarity with us and stay out of the Fairmont Miramar.”
A spokesperson for Unite Here Local 11 shared a video showing the alleged attacks.
Rooms at the luxury hotel start at around $500 per night, while the price of “bungalows” goes up to $4,499 per night.
Guests can stay in a ‘bungalow’ that costs more than $4,000 per night and has a private patio
Guests staying in ‘Bungalow One’ for that price can enjoy a furnished private patio, beds designed with ‘raw silk and cashmere bamboo’ and 750 feet of space.
The space is also equipped with four Samsung Smart TVs, art collections and ‘personalised toiletries’.
Or Messi and Co. stay in the hotel or not, they need a result this weekend in Los Angeles.
Despite the club’s Leagues Cup victory – the club’s first trophy in history – the lead currently stands at 10 points in the MLS postseason race, with the same number of games remaining.
