Lily Allen says she “wouldn’t get married” to husband David Harbor without being sober

‘I don’t even know if I’d be alive’: Lily Allen says she ‘wouldn’t marry’ David Harbor without being sober, as she discusses alcoholism and ‘responds’ to body-shaming trolls on social media

Lily Allen has admitted that she “wouldn’t have been married” to husband David Harbor if she wasn’t sober.

The singer, 37, discussed her battle with alcoholism and “responding” to body-shaming trolls on social media in a new interview on Thursday.

She reflected on her past four years of sobriety and shockingly confessed that without it, “she might not even be alive.”

In the candid discussion, Lily also opened up about her relationship with Instagram, having recently taken a break, saying she shouldn’t be influenced by trolls.

Speaking to Glamor Magazine about being sober, she said, “Virtually every aspect of my life has changed as a result of my sobriety. I don’t even know if I’d still be alive if I was honest if I hadn’t gotten sober.’

Lily explained that she had “quite a complex relationship” with drugs and alcohol and that she found it difficult to film certain scenes in her new drama Dreamland as a result.

In the series, her character Mel makes a “monumentally bad decision” that the actress says was “very triggering” for her to film.

She said how being sober had changed her life “immeasurably,” adding, “I don’t think I would marry my husband. I don’t think my kids would do so well.’

Elsewhere, Lily discussed her relationship on social media after dealing with some comments from followers saying she was too thin.

The star hit back saying it was “all bullshit” and how she wished she wouldn’t be affected by it.

“It’s so destructive and I wish I didn’t interact with it.” But sometimes I’m not very good at not responding. I am a reactive person. I wish I wasn’t. I hope I get to the point where I can just have someone else do all that interaction for me,” she said.

Lily, who has followed in her father Keith Allen’s acting footsteps, later admitted she has “complicated feelings” about the fake baby debate.

The singer has been open about her strained relationship with her father, saying in 2021 that they “haven’t spoken in a while.”

The pair have had a tumultuous relationship when, shortly after Lily’s birth, Keith began an affair with a brigadier general’s wife who lived near the set of a film he was working on. In 1989 his marriage to her mother Alison came to an end.

In 2018, Lily said Keith was left furious when she claimed he suffered a ‘cocaine-induced heart attack’ at the Glastonbury festival when she was 13 – when in reality it was acute food poisoning.

Admitting that she was “born into an incredibly privileged situation,” she explained how she accepted the opportunities “given” to her and expressed gratitude.

But added that nothing was “ever handed to her” because she “didn’t really have relationships” with certain family members.
