After earning critical acclaim for her West End debut in 2:22 A Ghost Story, Lily has proven she’s eager to stay in the theater world as she takes on a role in the first major rival of Martin McDonagh’s Olivier award-winning play.

In a role where Lily covers the side of her face in blood, The Pillowman will only run for a limited time, ending in early September.

The website reads: ‘In a totalitarian state, a writer is questioned by authorities about a spate of murders that bear similarities to her short stories. Is this life an imitation of art or something sinister?

Widely regarded as one of the greatest plays of the past 25 years, this black comedy explores the role of the artist in society and questions the price we pay for freedom of expression.

Lily is the first woman to take on the lead role of Katurian in the 2003 revival of the play, which follows the fiction writer as she is imprisoned by a totalitarian state.

Starring Steve Pemberton, who plays Tupolski, and Matthew Tennyson, who stars as Michael, Lily reprises the role previously played by David Tennant 20 years ago.

Speaking of the decision to cast a woman in the role, Lily shared The Telegraph: ‘I think it adds an extra layer of horror, because we are not used to women being beaten up.

“It will be shocking, in that sense. I also feel that men don’t necessarily get the same c**p for their artistic output as women do.’

The Pillowman follows Katurian as she is brutally interrogated by the authorities after a spate of murders bears similarities to her short stories.

It comes after Lily revealed she wrote musical versions of Black Mirror and Bridget Jones’s Diary.

Lily said on BBC Radio: ‘I’ve written the musical for Bridget Jones’s Diary and it hasn’t happened yet – maybe one day it will.

“I also edited an episode of Black Mirror for the stage, which was also sold to someone.

“It just hasn’t happened yet, but the music is over.”
