Lily Allen has admitted she was “hooked” on her fame while she was “off her face” on drugs and alcohol.
In a candid new interview, the 38-year-old singer reflected on her struggles with her vices before getting sober, describing the early years of her career as “a bit of a blur.”
Now four years sober, Lily has given up music to pursue an acting career and is currently starring in a West End production of The Pillowman.
Speak against The New York Timesshe said she went through a turbulent time promoting her album No Shame in 2018, leaving her “uninterested” in the industry.
She said, βFrom 18 to about four or five years ago it just feels like a bit of a blur because I was literally off my face the whole time.

She added, “I also used fame β that was an addiction in itself.”
Lily will wrap up her stint in The Pillowman next month, adding, “I can still play with the human experience, but I don’t have to put my heart on my sleeve as much” as I do in her music.
She previously reflected on her four years of sobriety in March, after settling in New York with husband David Harbor and her two daughters.
Speaking on This Morning, Lily said: ‘It’s weird. My life has changed so much.
“I’ve been clean and sober for four years, I’ve got a new husband, we’re settling our lives in America.”
Lily has always been open about her drinking and drug abuse, especially when she released her memoir My Thoughts Exactly in 2020.
In 2018, she came under fire for drug addiction after admitting to sniffing a line of ketamine at the 2008 Glamor Woman Of The Year Awards.
Describing what happened, Allen said, “Someone once gave me a line of what I assumed was cocaine at the Glamor Awards, but it turned out to be ketamine.” I got kicked out (passed over a fence) from the Glamor Awards for being in an ak-hole.β

She added: “Obviously I couldn’t talk or direct the driver, so my assistant instructed the occupant of the car behind to ‘follow that cab.’ I believe the occupant was @chattyman. I have no idea what happened next.’
The mother-of-two recently spoke about the challenges she faced in her demanding stage role that kept her away from her loved ones during its sustained three-month run.
Taking to Instagram, Lily admitted that she was battling loneliness because of it, exacerbated by attending her kids to a summer camp in the States.
She wrote, βHello Monday. 1 month to go from The Pillowman.
“I miss my house, I miss my bubbas who are both at summer camp, I haven’t even spoken to them in 2 weeks!”
“Tired and lonely, but the Banya always manages to get my blood flowing and cheer me up.”
