Lianne Sanderson thanked those who supported her following her exclusion from a celebration of England’s female players, but also spoke out to those who thought she was too busy without asking her directly.
Many former lionesses were invited to England’s friendly against the US at Wembley on Friday, but Sanderson, who now works as an expert, expressed frustration at the group’s exclusion, as previously reported by MailSport.
The 34-year-old’s name was also misspelled in the match schedule, she revealed, sharing her anger at not being involved in the celebrations after the match.
However, many people came to defend her and spoke to her right after Friday’s incidents – and she took to social media to thank those who contacted her.
In her first tweet, she wrote: “A huge thank you to the real people who contacted me. Yesterday [Saturday] was a terrible day for me. Very triggering. But what I will say is the amount of [heart emoji] and the messages I have received have given me strength. So thank you for that [prayer emoji]. I can feel quite lonely at times.’
She went on to say, “For those who messaged me to say they thought I got an invite or thought I was working for talk sports because there are a lot of people who have said that to me. It’s not that hard to pick up your phone and message me, is it? If you see, I’m not here. Instead of assuming.’

Sanderson lashed out at those who hadn’t contacted her with assumptions about the situation
Sanderson, who played 50 games for England and was part of the squad to finish third at the World Cup in 2015, felt the omission of Friday’s celebration was a continuation of the ‘systematic abuse’ from the FA she experienced as a player .
In her first statement, she said, “They forgot about me before and many times before and last night was just another example.”
She said the FA had forgotten her 50th cap and misspelled her name on the schedule and on the big screen during Friday’s friendly.
Sanderson noted that she had raised the issue of giving England the respect they deserve in the Houses of Parliament, only to stay out of the gathering of former Lionesses.

On Saturday, Sanderson said, “At least allow me a few moments to be proud of.
“I created a career in the media myself, no handouts or help from anyone after I was banned for speaking the truth and I will continue to do so.
“I’m glad all my former teammates enjoyed their evening, which makes me happy. But this made me so upset again. Thanks to those who continue to support me. My circle is tight.’
The FA has apologized to Sanderson, who earned 50 caps for the Lionesses before his retirement
After Sanderson’s initial statement, The Telegraph reported an apology from an FA spokesperson. It said, “We’re sorry. We invited Lianne, along with over 200 former players, to last night’s celebration, but she didn’t receive it. We have been in contact with her representatives to explain.
“We also apologize for the misspelling of her name in the program. With 50 caps, Lianne is an England great and deserves full recognition for the service she has given to the national team.”
Sanderson retired from the game in 2019, following her success as an international player and football in England, Spain, the US and Italy.
