Lewis Dunk was shown two yellow cards in quick succession for dissent during Brighton’s 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest.

The defender was given his marching orders by Anthony Taylor after persistently contesting a penalty awarded to Forest.

Brighton midfielder Jack Hinshelwood dragged Callum Hudson-Odoi to the ground and while Taylor initially waved away the shouts, he awarded the penalty after watching the foul on the monitor.

Dunk was furious and got in Taylor’s face before confronting fourth official Andy Davies after being sent off.

The flare-up comes amid Mail Sport’s campaign entitled ‘Stop Abusing Referees’, which aims to shine a light on the aggressive behavior officials face.

Controversial VAR calls have been at the center of discussion all season and referees have been subject to constant abuse.

As many as 10,000 referees have left football in the past five years and a spate of embarrassing antics by top managers – be it Mikel Arteta, Mauricio Pochettino, Jurgen Klopp or Marco Silva – has increased the bad examples being set at the top.

Gibbs-White converted the home side’s penalty after Dunk’s dismissal and although Forest could not find an equalizer, being a man down made Brighton’s job more difficult.

Forest had opened the scoring after three minutes through Anthony Elanga.

However, Evan Ferguson scored the equalizer and Joao Pedro scored either side of half-time to give Brighton plenty of daylight and help Robert de Zerbi’s men to a third win in six games.

The other two victories came against Ajax in the Europa League, making this a much-needed first competition win since September for the Seagulls.

They have risen to seventh in the Premier League, while Nottingham Forest remain fourteenth.
