Lewis Capaldi invites lucky teenage fan on stage for duet at intimate Bristol gig

Lewis Capaldi invited a lucky fan on stage for a surprise duet on Wednesday when he gave an intimate performance at Bristol’s Marble Factory.

Yasmine Kabbara-Dolby, 17, got the chance to make her dream come true when she was raised on stage to sing alongside the star, 26.

The pair, who also met in 2019, sang Someone You Loved on stage – a song dear to Yasmine’s heart after her mother’s partner had a double lung transplant.

Yasmine, who brought a banner to the concert and asked to sing with him, told BBC News: ‘It was the most surreal experience of my life.’

She said, “It was a nagging feeling in the back of my mind that I really wanted it to happen, but I wasn’t expecting it.

“What scared me the most wasn’t the 2,000 people watching, but singing to Lewis Capaldi.

“It’s been amazing and I’m an artist in development in Bristol and it’s such a great platform that people have heard my voice and started following me.”

Yasmine had met Capaldi at Rough Trade in Bristol in 2019 when she explained that her mother’s partner, Dave, had had a double lung transplant.

The Bristol show was one of the few intimate low-key gigs in the UK before Capaldi went on tour and played major summer festivals, including Glastonbury and Reading.

Lewis previously left his fans sobbing with delight when he brought the Jonas Brothers onstage at his concert in New York City.

The singer took the stage at Radio City Music Hall as part of his Broken By Desire to Be Heavenly Sent tour.

But the hitmaker wasn’t alone for long, as he surprised the audience by inviting the boy band onto the stage for part of the show to perform their song Lovebug.

Lewis took to Twitter and shared a snippet of Nick, Kevin and Joe Jonas performing on stage, writing, “The bonus bonus Jonas.”

The Scottish star’s fans were sent into a frenzy by the surprise guests, with some taking to Twitter to reveal they were moved to tears.

One fan wrote, “I was shaking so bad, I’m still crying,” while another added, “I cried and screamed, I had a great night.”

A third fan added, “Best night ever,” while a fourth wrote, “The best thing we’ve ever seen at a concert and we weren’t even there!”

Lewis’s fans burst into tears on Wednesday as he candidly discussed how his mental health struggles nearly ended his career.

In his emotional document, the musician tells how the pressure after the success of his first album, Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent, caused “terrifying” panic attacks.

Lewis, who was diagnosed with Gilles de la Tourette after doctors noticed his uncontrollable shoulder twitches, also discussed being a hypochondriac.

Hypochondriasis causes patients to feel extreme anxiety about their health, including worrying that they are or may become seriously ill.

The Scottish singer said: ‘I’ve always been a hypochondriac. I’ve been obsessed, if there’s something wrong with me, I’m like, “F**k, I’m going to die.”

“I went to a therapist and she said, ‘Don’t you think that has something to do with the fact that your grandmother and your aunt both died when you were three and four, within a year.’

Lewis described how his anxiety manifested itself in a shrug that would become so severe while writing songs that he had to put his second album on hold.

After his Someone You Love was a huge hit, Lewis doubted himself if he could ever recreate the magic when he was writing in lockdown.

He says, ‘I’m not confident in my abilities as a songwriter and I think that will get worse the more successful I am.

“The twitching I have gets worse when I sit down to play the piano. Physically painful. And I get really short of breath and it’s like my back is killing me if I start doing it. That’s quite frightening.’

Lewis’s anxiety mounted and he started having terrible panic attacks as he struggled to deal with the magnitude of his success.

He says to the documentary makers: ‘I am completely detached from reality. I can’t breathe, I can’t feel the breath going in. I get dizzy, I feel like something is happening in my head and I sweat.

My whole body starts doing what my shoulder is doing and I start having convulsions. Either I feel like I’m stuck like this forever, or I’m going to die.

“It’s a very normal reaction to this for me. When you get into this situation, you get something like this, especially if you’re already an anxious person, which I think I was.

“I never had the pressure that caused me to explode completely, but we’re here now, so we just have to deal with it.”
