- Levi Colwill has basically signed a new six-year contract with The Blues
- Brighton tried to sign him but Chelsea turned down two bids from the Seagulls
- Colwill will earn more than £100,000 a week from his new deal with Chelsea
Levi Colwill delivered an emotional farewell message to Brighton after opting to stay at Chelsea rather than sign for the Seagulls.
Roberto De Zerbi had hoped to bring the England under-21 international back to the south coast after impressing on loan last season.
However, the 20-year-old has since signed a new six-year deal with the Blues worth more than £100,000 a week.
The defender posted to his social media channels thanking Brighton for giving him the chance to play Premier League football ‘when no one else did’ – a swipe at former boss Thomas Tuchel for sending him on loan .
‘To Brighton and Hove Albion. I am proud to have played a small part in the club’s success last season,” he wrote.
Levi Colwill will stay at Stamford Bridge at least until 2029 after signing a new six-year contract with the club
Thomas Tuchel reportedly did not see Colwill as part of his plans at Chelsea and repeatedly sent him on loan
“You gave me the chance to play in the Premier League when no one else did. I thank Graham Potter for being the first to get me to the club and I thank all the stadium and training ground staff for making it a great place to perform and develop.
To the fans, you have always stood by me! Since coming off your side, your continued support made me feel comfortable playing the way I wanted to play and not afraid to make mistakes.
“You have given me a platform to shine and show what I can do in the best league in the world. I will never forget that you supported me.
‘Last Roberto De Zerbi, you challenged me every day! You made me think and watch football in a different way. I can’t thank you enough. Thanks again LC.’
Colwill and Tuchel reportedly had a rocky relationship, with the youngster feeling he had no future at the club while the German was still in charge.
After impressing on loan at Huddersfield in the Championship during the 2021/22 season, Colwill had hoped to play in Chelsea’s plans last season, but was instead loaned out again, this time to Brighton.
On his return to Stamford Bridge in the summer, new manager Mauricio Pochettino is said to have quickly put things right in a private meeting with the player and promised him quite a few playing opportunities in the left-back role.
