The Premier League has announced a major change to VAR ahead of the 2024-25 season.

VAR has been used in England’s top flight since the 2019-20 season and has seen a number of controversial incidents since then.

Last season, Nottingham Forest criticised VAR on X after decisions went against them during a match against Everton.

However, the Premier League is now taking steps to address these issues.

After the announcement, the change was met with mixed reactions from fans.

The Premier League has announced a major change to VAR ahead of the 2024-25 season

The Premier League has launched a new account on X, where refereeing decisions are explained almost live.

A statement from the Premier League said: ‘The Premier League has launched a new X account @PLMatchCentre ahead of the start of the 2024/25 season.

‘For the first time, the social media account will provide near-live explanations and updates on operational and refereeing matters for every Premier League match.

‘The account will provide factual explanations of on-field refereeing decisions and the involvement of the video referee (VAR), including the role of technology in the decision-making process.

‘In the absence of live VAR audio broadcasts, which is not permitted in football, the Premier League Match Centre can broadcast near-live information from the VAR Hub via social media during a match.

‘Premier League Match Centre – located at Stockley Park – is the League’s operational hub, helping to ensure the smooth running of the competition’s matchday operations. It is connected to all 20 Premier League stadiums, the VAR Hub and broadcast partners around the world.’

Some fans believe the change will be positive, with one writing: ‘Finally! This is a big step forward’.

However, some supporters are less optimistic about the new initiative, with one saying: ‘I can’t wait for the updates on bad VAR decisions and apologies.’

Another fan said: ‘At least the incompetence will be entertaining.’

Another fan predicted that there would be ‘chaos’. They wrote: ‘Let the chaos begin. This should be fun.’
